A robust online directory of funders and grant opportunities for journalism, started by a news executive in Raleigh, N.C., has a new home as part of NewsFuel as of Feb. 1.
The Journalism Grants Directory began in 2019 as a passion project of Jane Elizabeth, who was managing editor of The News & Observer in Raleigh at the time. Since then, more and more journalists within McClatchy, which owns The News & Observer, and elsewhere in the media industry learned about and used the directory. Elizabeth retired from the publication in 2020, and by that time, the directory had grown to include hundreds of opportunities for journalism funding as well as tip sheets and resource guides.
Product leaders at LMA and McClatchy agreed in late 2020 to move the directory to NewsFuel oversight.
We're maintaining the directory in its original Google Sheet format at a new web address for now, and will begin the process of merging and updating the listings in the NewsFuel web database. Elizabeth Thompson, a journalist who worked with Jane Elizabeth to build and maintain the directory, has signed on to assist with research and upkeep of the listings.
Full details of this big step for NewsFuel are posted on the LMA website.
