2022 CatchLight Local California Fellowship

CatchLight is expanding its collaborative model of visual journalism to California. This initiative will build a new model for visual journalism, advance representation, and serve communities throughout the state.

CatchLight is excited to announce the opening of two more CL Local Fellowship positions for 2022 joining out existing list of newsroom partners for the CatchLight Local Visual Desk in CA:

  • CalMatters – Fresno, California
  • India Currents – San Jose, California

CalMatters is an award-winning, nonpartisan, nonprofit news organization dedicated to explaining the policy and politics of America’s biggest state and the world’s fifth largest economy.

India Currents is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, multi-platform ethnic media organization focused on the Indian American community with a mission to tell relevant and investigative stories for and about the diaspora in the Bay Area.

CatchLight is looking for exceptional talent, willingness to collaborate across newsrooms and communities, commitment to community engagement throughout project production and distribution, as well as a drive to shed light on diverse perspectives and social issues in a local context.

During their Fellowship, CatchLight Local Fellows will become full-time employees of their host newsrooms, receiving an annual salary of $60,000 with health benefits. Fellows will work on both shorter visual assignments as well as a “deep dive” enterprise visual reporting project determined in collaboration with CatchLight, the newsroom partner, and information needs of the community in which they are working.

Fellows also receive professional development opportunities facilitated by CatchLight, visual editing, and production support on community engagement projects.

Fellows will also be asked to share their work at relevant CatchLight events throughout the year such as our annual spring visual storytelling summit.
