With support from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, the IWMF is launching Women on The Ground: Reporting from Ukraine’s Unseen Frontlines, a program to increase and deepen coverage of critical issues surrounding the war. This program is designed to support journalists from local and regional outlets in the U.S., France and Germany in producing in-depth projects or underreported stories from Ukraine that will resonate with their respective home communities.
The IWMF is holding several reporting trips open to women and nonbinary journalists from these countries beginning in early 2025. All reporting fellows will participate in a mandatory 3-day Hostile Environment and First Aid Training (HEFAT) upon arrival. The IWMF arranges travel and in-country logistics for all fellows and covers fellowship-related costs within the framework of the reporting trip including travel, lodging, and meals.
Throughout the reporting trip, fellows will have the opportunity to network with other journalists, report collaboratively with their peers, and gain access to various sources and sites related to their reporting.
To augment the reporting produced during the reporting trips, the IWMF will approve fifteen to twenty reporting grants (average size of $8,000). The IWMF encourages international journalists to team up with their Ukrainian counterparts to co-report stories, thereby funding reporting by local reporters with the deepest knowledge of their own country.
Story pitches should explore underreported issues in Ukraine, with a focus on communities impacted by the war that are important to their local communities in the United States, France or Germany.
This opportunity is open to women and nonbinary journalists.
