Eugene C. Pulliam Fellowship for Public Service Journalism

The Society of Professional Journalists Foundation awards the Eugene C. Pulliam Fellowship for Public Service Journalism to support mid-career journalists in pursuing in-depth public service reporting projects. The fellowship provides time and resources to go beyond daily deadlines and produce impactful work.

About the Fellowship

  • Up to $100,000 award (may be split among more than one fellow).
  • Supports courses, independent study, research, or travel to deepen knowledge of a public interest issue.
  • Fellows are expected to produce published work such as editorials, investigative series, podcasts, or books.
  • Established in 1977 with funding from Nina Pulliam in honor of publisher Eugene C. Pulliam.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be a mid-career journalist working in the U.S. (staff or freelance).
  • Specialize in opinion writing, analysis, or investigative reporting.
  • Have at least three years of professional experience.
  • Demonstrate outstanding writing and analytical ability.
  • Show ability and intent to publish within 6–12 months of selection.
  • Submit work in English.

  • Cover letter with project purpose, timeline, and budget plan.
  • Endorsement from an editor (including for freelancers).
  • One-page biography and summary of experience.
  • Five samples of opinion or analytical writing.
