JournalismAI Innovation Challenge

The JournalismAI Innovation Challenge, supported by the Google News Initiative, is a 9-month program supporting small–medium news publishers experimenting with AI to improve audience intelligence and revenue growth.

Focus areas:
Projects using AI to:

  • Strengthen subscriptions, memberships, donations (e.g., dynamic paywalls, churn prediction, personalized recommendations).

  • Create new revenue streams (e.g., data-insights products, structured premium content services).

  • Use AI for audience understanding and monetization strategies.

What they fund:
Up to 12 organizations.

  • 8 grants of $50,000

  • 4 grants of $100,000

Eligibility:

  • Small and medium-sized news publishers.

  • Organizations already exploring AI.

  • Project can be early-stage, pre-launch, or building on an existing proof-of-concept.
