Taylor/Blakeslee Graduate Fellowships

The Council for the Advancement of Science Writing (CASW) offers $6,000 fellowships to support outstanding journalists and students pursuing graduate-level study in science writing. These fellowships help emerging science communicators gain advanced training to write about science, medicine, health, technology, and the environment for general audiences.

One fellow focused on the physical sciences (physics, astronomy, chemistry, etc.) will receive an enhanced fellowship, which includes additional travel funding and mentorship from a senior journalist.

Eligibility

  • Accepted or enrolled in a U.S. graduate program in science writing (master’s or certificate).

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

  • Applicants should show strong writing ability and a clear commitment to science journalism.

  • Journalists with 2+ years of reporting experience (including college media) are especially encouraged.

  • Applicants must have at least one full year of study remaining.

  • Members of underrepresented groups in science and media are strongly encouraged to apply.

Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated writing skill and potential for excellence in science journalism.

  • Commitment to reporting for the public rather than technical or PR writing.

  • Academic readiness and clear plan for applying graduate training to science communication.
