AAAS Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellowship

The AAAS Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellowship connects scientists and journalists by placing advanced STEM students and early-career researchers in leading media organizations such as NPR, the Los Angeles Times, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, and STAT. For 10 weeks, fellows work as journalists, translating complex scientific research into accessible stories for the public.

What’s Offered

  • 10-week summer fellowship at a U.S. media outlet.

  • $10,000 stipend plus travel expenses to and from AAAS and placement sites.

  • Orientation and wrap-up sessions in Washington, D.C. (early June and mid-August).

  • Hands-on experience working with professional journalists.

Program Goals

  • Improve the public’s understanding of science through clear, engaging storytelling.

  • Provide scientists with firsthand newsroom experience.

  • Build long-term bridges between scientists and media professionals.

Who Should Apply

  • Advanced undergraduate, graduate, or postdoctoral students in the life, physical, health, engineering, computer, or social sciences, or mathematics.

  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens or hold visas that allow paid work in the U.S. during the summer.

  • U.S. citizens studying abroad may apply if they can cover travel to the U.S.

  • Students in journalism, English, or communication fields should instead apply for the Diverse Voices in Science Journalism Internship.

Award Details

  • Stipend: $10,000

  • Duration: 10 weeks (June–August 2026)

  • Travel: Provided (to/from AAAS and placement site)
