Spencer Education Fellowship

What it offers: A one-academic-year fellowship supporting the development and publication of an ambitious long-form journalism project on education. The program combines study, research, reporting, and mentoring. Residential and non-residential options available.

Who it’s for: Journalists and educators seeking to advance public understanding of education. Applicants with experience reporting on education (or related fields), or educators with journalism experience, are encouraged to apply. No academic prerequisites.

Focus: In-depth, long-form journalism projects on education for a general audience.

Amount/value:

  • $85,000 stipend (residential)

  • $43,000 stipend (non-residential)

  • $7,500 project expense allowance

  • Faculty adviser from Columbia Journalism School and access to an expert content professor (e.g., Teachers College or other relevant department).
