The Emerging Leaders Institute for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

The Emerging Leaders Institute for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion is the premier program of the News Leaders Association, launched over a decade ago. Its goal is to accelerate the rise of traditionally underrepresented journalists into the management ranks of newsrooms in digital, broadcast and print organizations, and to support those who have already launched their leadership careers.

While open to all, ELI’s primary mission is to support journalists who have been underrepresented in management ranks, specifically by race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation or disability. If that’s your mission, too – join us!

Requirements to participate: Participants from all professional journalism platforms are encouraged to apply for this 1-1/2 day workshop on July 11-12, 2023.

Twenty-five journalists will get the chance to network and learn from experienced professionals through the ELI. It will be an in-person event July 11 & 12 in Miami, just before the annual convention of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. The #ELI4DEI @NAHJ curriculum, led by a diverse team of industry experts, includes sessions on leadership skills and values, budgeting, performance management and collaboration — all through the lens of leading a diverse, successful team and finding your important voice as a leader.

To apply: Fill out the application form online, including uploading a PDF of your resume. (You must sign in to Google to access the form.) We’ll also need a letter of recommendation from a supervisor. You can upload that along with the application, or email it to jkroll@newsleaders.org. Applications must be filled out, and recommendation letters received, by April 7, 2023.

Dates: The institute will be held in the InterContinental Hotel in Miami, with a full day of sessions on Tuesday, July 11, and a half-day Wednesday, July 12. The NAHJ convention begins Wednesday afternoon.

Cost: Participants will pay $195 for the institute. This includes breakfasts Tuesday and Wednesday, lunch Tuesday, and a free one-year membership in the NLA. Discounted rates for lodging are available through the NLA for Monday and Tuesday nights.
